Ahead of time for the Women's World Cup 2023, FC Barcelona's Women's team (the reference for women's soccer in Barcelona, and current reference for world soccer overall) won the biggest title in Women's Soccer, the Champions League. It's the fourth time in the team's history to make it this far.
When we first wrote this article in 2019, the match between FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid broke the record for the most spectators at a women's football club game with 60,700 people in attendance. This came shortly after another record setting game in Spain between Atlético Madrid and Athletic Bilbao, where nearly 50,000 people were in the stadium. Prior to these records, the last female club match that held the record was in 1920 and had 53,000 in attendance in England between Dick Kerr's Ladies and St. Helen's Ladies. A year later, the English Football Association (FA) banned women's soccer altogether stating that it is "an unsuitable sport for women." Tell that to Mia Hamm in person.
However, the new record attendance now stands at 91,648 spectators. In Barcelona's Camp Nou, the record was set in the first leg of the FC Barcelona vs Wolfsburg match on their way to UEFA Women's Champions League final.
Side Note: The record attendance for any female soccer match is 90,000+ for a Women's World Cup game in 1999 with United States versus China. It is undeniable that there is a growing presence of support with female sports around the globe, and it is excellent to see such progress; however, it's important to also acknowledge that we have a long way to go.
CocoVail will broadcast the Women's World Cup 2023 in July & August.
Spain wins The World Cup 1 - 0 versus England. Congrats to Spain!!!
